The Embodied Carbon workflow helps you estimate the whole-life global warming potential (GWP) of your building materials. You upload a material takeoff as a CSV, choose a city or region to source Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) data, and RFI Manager automatically matches each material to the most relevant EPD. The result is a per-material GWP breakdown in kgCO2e and a project total you can use for reporting or design optimisation.
Embodied Carbon analysis requires a project to be selected. If you navigate to this page without an active project you will be redirected to the projects list.

Selecting a city or region

EPD data varies significantly by geography. Before uploading your schedule, choose the city that best represents your project location from the City dropdown. Regional EPD databases are loaded automatically based on your selection and used to find the closest matching product declarations for each material. If your exact city is not listed, choose the nearest major city in the same region. You can also enter a custom latitude, longitude, and search radius if you need precise geographic scoping.

Uploading your material schedule

1

Prepare your CSV

Export a material takeoff from your BIM tool or quantity surveyor’s schedule as a CSV. The file must include material names and quantities. Include units and any specification details to improve EPD match accuracy. The maximum file size is 10 MB.
2

Upload the file

Drag your CSV onto the upload area or click to browse. The selected file appears as a preview card before processing begins.
3

Start the analysis

Click Process to begin EPD matching. A progress bar tracks the number of materials processed. You can see which material is currently being matched in the status line.
If you have already run a material cleanup using the Material Cleanup workflow, the cleaned CSV is passed automatically to the Embodied Carbon page. You do not need to upload it again.

Viewing EPD matches per material

Once processing completes, each material row in the results table shows:
  • Material name — from your CSV
  • Matched EPD — the product declaration used for the GWP calculation
  • GWP — the calculated global warming potential in kgCO2e, derived from the EPD value multiplied by your quantity
  • Quantity and unit — the values from your schedule
The total embodied carbon for all matched materials appears at the top of the results panel. If you have entered the project’s gross floor area (GFA), the panel also displays the embodied carbon intensity in kgCO2e/m².

Matched vs unmatched materials

Use the Show unmatched only toggle to filter down to materials for which no EPD could be found. These rows have no GWP value and are excluded from the project total. Resolving unmatched materials — either by editing the EPD or adjusting the material name — improves the completeness of your carbon estimate.

Editing EPD matches manually

If the automatically matched EPD is not the best fit for a material, you can substitute a different one:
1

Open the EPD edit dialog

Click the edit icon on the material row you want to update. The EPD selection dialog opens and shows candidate EPDs for that material.
2

Select a replacement EPD

Browse or search the available EPDs. Each candidate shows the product name, the GWP value per unit, and a link to the source declaration.
3

Confirm the change

Click Apply to update the match. The GWP value for that material and the project total both recalculate immediately.
Manual EPD edits are tracked separately from the AI-matched values. If you re-run the analysis, your manual overrides are preserved so you do not need to re-apply them.

Filtering the results

The results table includes filter controls to help you focus on specific parts of your material list:
  • Show matched only / unmatched only — quickly isolate materials that need attention
  • Column visibility — hide or show columns to simplify the view for reporting

Exporting results

Click Export to download the full results as a CSV. The exported file includes the original material data from your schedule alongside the matched EPD name, GWP per unit, total GWP, and match status for each row. Unmatched materials are included with blank GWP fields so you have a complete record of your schedule.
Export your results before making manual EPD edits if you want to preserve the original AI-matched baseline for comparison.

Past runs

The past runs panel lists every previous embodied carbon analysis in your workspace. Click a past run to reload its results without re-uploading your CSV. This is useful for reviewing historical estimates or comparing the carbon impact of design iterations.
